The Mediterranean is one of the most beautiful regions in the world and it’s versatile landscape makes for an ever changing scenery that can be easily explored by cruise.
You can enjoy a day at the beach on the French Riviera, immerse yourself in cultural experiences in Rome or just take a stroll along the tiny cobble streets lined with cute little cafes and restaurants in Hvar.
Whatever you fancy, it’s guaranteed you’ll enjoy a day out in any of the ports you can dock at in the Mediterranean when you take a cruise.
I myself have done two Mediterranean cruises already, which I absolutely loved and today I want to talk about why exploring this region by cruise is an ideal way to go about seeing the Mediterranean.
10 Reasons Why You Should Take A Mediterranean Cruise
1. HISTORY AND CULTURE
The Mediterranean is one of those regions steeped in history and culture. You have these old, tiny and tight cobble streets where you can get easily lost and many old churches, bazars and markets.
Many buildings got this old shabby chic charm, which I personally absolutely adore and traces of what life must have been like when the Romans and Venetians ruled the lands. Plus, many of the UNSESCO world heritage sites can be found in this region of the world.
2. THE FOOD
This must be one of the biggest drawing points for many people – the food. The Mediterranean cuisine is just amazing. The freshness, the wine, antipasti, the bakery I could go on and on. It’s simply delicious and I would urge anyone to visit local restaurants and cafes.
I went to this little hidden roof terrace restaurant run by a family in Santorini and ordered an antipasti platter. It had fresh hummus, stuffed vine leaves, handmade pitta, an aubergine dip and a few other things and I swear I never had such a delicious antipasti ever again.
3. RIGHT IN THE CITY
Mediterranean cruises are almost like river cruises on a much bigger scale. What I mean by that is that the ships to 90% dock right next to the city or a very short stroll away. This is great as you get to spend more time sightseeing instead of wasting it in a transfer bus.
4. EXCELLENT WEATHER
The Mediterranean cruise season is roughly from the beginning of May to the end of September, which means it’s like guaranteed you’ll get sunshine every day.
If you’re looking for warmth, come to the Mediterranean. However, I’d like to point out that the summer months can get really hot and busy. Therefore, if you’re not tight to a specific time schedule book that cruise for May or September.
5. VISIT MULTIPLE COUNTRIES
As with many cruise, a Mediterranean cruise allows you to visit multiple countries in a very short period of time, which I think is awesome. My first cruise, which was a 7 day itinerary, took me to Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece.
I never really thought about visiting Montenegro or Slovenia to be perfectly honest, but after visiting the ports there I got a glimpse of those countries, which now makes me want to go back to explore them in more depth one day.
6. OLD AND NEW
What I personally love about a Mediterranean cruise is that you get that mix of old and new, heritage and modern.
Take Athens for example. Of course you have the beautiful and mysterious Greek temples, amphitheatres and the birthplace of the Olympics. But then you also have modern structures, modern art galleries and so much more.
7. AFFORDABLE WAY TO SEE THE MEDITERRANEAN
I talked about this before in My Top 3 Reasons Why Everyone Should Try A Cruise, but taking a cruise in general is a very affordable way of travelling as you get so much included in your cruise fare such as food, transportation, entertainment, activities and accommodation.
Plus, some ports you’ll dock at such as Monte Carlo or St Tropez would cost a fortune to stay overnight a few days in a reasonably nice hotel, at least for me.
8.HASSLE FREE TRAVEL
When you board your cruise ship you only need to unpack once and the captain takes you to all those lovely ports. What’s not to love?
You leave your ship in the morning and return in the afternoon or even night and the next day you wake up in a new port. No packing, no figuring out how to get there. You just sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. The most hassle free way of travelling.
9. VISIT MANY WOLRD FAMOUS SIGHTS
The Mediterranean countries have an abundance of cultural and heritage sites and many of them are world famous such as the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the leaning Tower of Pisa in well Pisa or the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco.
10. BEAUTIFUL AND SCENIC
People always ask if they should book a starboard or portside cabin. But when you take a Mediterranean cruise it really doesn’t matter what side of the ship you book.
You’re surrounded through the entire cruise more or less by beautiful landscapes, especially if you’re taking a cruise that goes through the Adriatic Sea.
